| The joys of free kicks. Some of the most spectacular goals come from these set plays. It is important to try and always make the most out of this set piece as possible. A good opportunity like this only comes once in a while and it could lead you to scoring a goal. Direct kicks are a good opportunity to score goals. These type of set plays are usually around 20 - 30 yards from goal. Close enough to take a shot at goal! The opposing team, when this happens, usually set up a wall of defenders 10 feet away from where the kick is taken. The goal keeper will most likely position themselves so as they can see the ball. The idea is to take a shot at goal while trying not to hit the wall of defenders and out of the keepers reach. Most professionals opt to swerve the ball over the wall and out of reach from the keeper. To make the ball swerve, rather then strike the ball centrally, hit the ball more to the left or right to create spin as it travels through the air. This, in most cases, will cause the ball to swerve. Fooling the keeper and ultimately scoring a goal. |
